FORMULA ROLLS THROUGH ABA ROSEVILLE AND UTAH

Salt Lake City, Utah -  Factory Formula Bicycle Co. / Vitamin Water has been busy with the ABA’s summer schedule, making stops in Roseville, California two weeks ago and Salt Lake City, Utah last weekend.  Formula Pros Alise Post, Deak Brown, and Arielle Martin, along with Formula am’s Lee Lewis, Trevor Morley, Anthony Bucardo, and Andre Norles all contributed to the Formula “war effort”, especially since the team decided to throw their hat in the Factory Team competition at both nationals.  The extra competition gave even more fuel to each rider’s fire as a little “Team Pride” was on the line.

Alise Post – Women’s Pro – Formula Nucleus Pro Minus – The defending ABA National #1 Pro has had a crazy year so far, dividing her time between the ABA schedule and the growing international scene since the Olympics graced BMX with its presence.  Alise has definitely had her hands full making the transition back and forth between the World Cup style of racing and normal ABA/NBL tracks. Even so, Alise showed that her growing skill was on point in Roseville with a nice win on Saturday over rookie pro and new-found nemesis Dominique Daniels.  Alise nailed down a second on day two.  In Utah, windy conditions kept most of the girls grounded, but Alise still managed two second place finishes behind teammate Arielle Martin.

Arielle Martin – Women’s Pro – Formula Nucleus Pro Plus – Arielle year has also been full of ups and downs.  A virtual lock for the US’s sole Olympic berth, some bad luck at the World Championships in China cost Arielle the spot by one point.  Now back with a vengeance and her sites set on the ABA title, Arielle simply OWNED Rad Canyon.  Chalk up two big wins for Ari.   A third Women’s Pro title contender perhaps?  This is about to get interesting.

Deak Brown – A Pro – Formula Nucleus Pro XL – You know an A Pro main is on the gate when you hear the “Deeeeaakkkkkkk!!!” chants.  Arguably the most popular A Pro around now gets to try his hand at the AA ranks.  AA Deak made the jump after a huge win on Saturday in Utah. Sunday, Deak made semi’s, fueled on new-pro-stoke.  Not bad, rook.  Deak’s been very consistent lately, coming hot off a win in Roseville on Sunday.  Congrats homey!

Lee Lewis – 19-27 Expert – Formula Nucleus Pro – Lee has been waiting to turn up into the 19-27 class, and his first outing was exactly what he expected with a huge win on Saturday in Roseville.  Day two didn’t go exactly as planned, with a second in the main.  Lee had to bid farewell to his ride on Sunday in Roseville, as the ABA is giving away Lee’s race bike in the next issue of the BMX’er.  One of you lucky Flea fans out there is about to get a sweet Formula decked out with Profile parts and FSA gear.  I guess Lee had the new-bike-blues Saturday in Utah, mustering a fourth.  Sunday he was back to form with a nice second in 19-27 Expert.

Trevor Morley – 17-18 Expert – Formula Nucleus Pro Plus – Trevor took a little time off the bike but came back in fine style in Roseville, with a pair of podium finishes – two thirds - for the weekend.  In Utah, Trevor had a little mishap in Saturday’s semi and didn’t make the cut.  He was back with a vengeance on Sunday with a HUGE win in 17-18 Expert.  Nice job, Trev.

Zach Rehder – 28-35 Expert, 26-30 Cruiser – Formula Nucleus Pro XL, Formula Nucleus Pro XL Cruiser – Zach made his Formula debut in Utah, with some great results.  In class, Zach pulled down two podiums for the weekend.  In cruiser, Zach grabbed a fourth on Saturday, but was back on the podium on Sunday with a nice 2nd

Andre Norles – 14 Expert – Formula Nucleus Expert Plus - Andre ran into an off weekend in Roseville, managing 3 out of 4 mains.  Andre was out front all day but couldn’t seem to put anything together come main time.  Look for Andre back to form at the next national.

Anthony Bucardo – 9 Expert – Formula Nucleus Junior Plus – Anthony has been on fire lately, to put it mildly.  Little Bucardo racked up a double on Saturday in Roseville in class and open.  Anthony didn’t race open on Sunday but still killed 9 Expert, making 3 wins out of the 3 mains.  In Utah, Bucardo had to settle for a rare second pace finish on Saturday.  Sunday he was back to form with a great win in 9 Expert.

Factory Team – If any of you follow the Formula team at all, you probably know that we don’t normally run Factory Team sheets.  Every once in a while, we get the itch for a little extra competition and turn a team sheet in just to keep the rest of the Factory guys honest.  In Roseville, the team pulled down two nice second place finishes.  Not bad for just having six riders attend the race.  Utah was much of the same, with only six riders in attendance.  Saturday the team settled for a third, but on Sunday the team missed the win by less than five points and had to settle for second.

Look for the Formula Factory Pros at the next ABA pro race in Reno, Nevada.

Formula offers it’s Nucleus Race Frames with 30 sizes to guarantee a perfect fit for any rider.  Formula’s Solution complete bikes are now available – ready to race, fully decked out bikes, that BMX Plus! Magazine called “Awesome”.   For more info please visit www.formulabicycles.com , call 619-276-3040 , or email info@formulabicycles.com.

2008 NBL Grand Nationals to Celebrate the History and Future of BMX Racing

USA’s most exciting Championship BMX race will soon take over Derby City BMX Track in Louisville, Kentucky from August 29 – 31. The 2008 NBL Grand National begins only 8 days after the sport makes its thrilling debut at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China and the NBL has planned several new events to celebrate the past, present and future of the sport.

The fastest riders from around the world always attend the Grands and this year, the fastest riders from the past will be honored at the NBL Hall Of Fame Awards on Saturday evening.

The NBL Grand National is much more than just a race – it’s an ‘Experience’ and to celebrate the Olympic year, NBL will be inducting three past-champions into the NBL Hall Of Fame. Greg Esser, first NBL Men’s Pro - 1979,  Kathy Schachel, first NBL Women’s Pro - 1985 and ‘Stompin’ Stu Thomsen, two-time NBL Pro – 1981 & 1982.

NBL will proudly induct the three athletes into the Hall of Fame during an evening ceremony following Saturday’s Pro Spectacular at a venue to be announced.  Greg and Kathy will be inducted as a tribute to the first riders to win official NBL Pro titles.

Greg Esser, son of NBL founder, George Esser, made history as the first rider to win the NBL Pro Men’s title in 1979. Prior to 1985, the women’s class was known as ‘Powder Puff’ and Kathy Schachel won it three consecutive years from 1981-83. Though she lost the title in 1984 to Debbi Kaslow, she stormed back in 1985 to win the first ever Pro Women’s title in BMX and held it for a two-year term.

Stu Thomsen, who held back-to-back NBL Pro titles from 1981-82, will be recognized for his incredible career of achievements and milestones. Craig Reynolds, now an established host, reporter, writer and emcee, was a popular rider on the NBL circuit for many years and has been named as the master of ceremonies.

In addition to the HOF inductions, NBL will recognize the 2008 Pro Champions and all Olympic athletes who attend the Grands. Oh yeah, did we mention that Stu is racing the Grands and is also starring in a new movie from the producers of ‘Joe Kid on a Stingray’? Truth! – John Swarr and Mark Eaton of ‘Joe Kid’ fame plan to show a short teaser from their new film about Stu’s life at the HOF awards. Tickets and venue information to follow.

To compliment the Hall of Fame awards, an Old-School Museum will be on display throughout the weekend with all kinds of memorabilia from the past. Look for more ‘Grands’ news coming soon.

Here’s a quick peek at the NBL Grand National Schedule:

EIGHT GLOBAL RIDERS TO HELP REDLINE REMAKE BMX HISTORY

Redline Bicycles has always been up for task when it comes to making BMX history. As maker of the first tubular fork and crank, the first chromoly frame and first double-clamp stem, the Redline name was permanently inked in to the BMX history books a long time ago. Still, nearly 35 years later, Redline Bicycles continues to keep up the History-making tradition with our support of eight premiere Olympic athletes from four different countries.

The “Awesome Eight” have been chosen to represent their Country this August, when BMX Racing is set to make its Olympic debut as the Summer Games’ first big “action sport.” Aboard Redline’s trusty FLIGHT bikes, the following riders will be focused on the fame and glory of medaling for their homeland, while simultaneously demonstrating to the World what an incredible sport BMX Racing is.

To help celebrate this history-making accomplishment, REDLINE has just gone live with their “NEXT STOP, BEIJING” page – to help introduce everyone to these exceptional World class BMX racers:

SHANAZE READE/UK – click to read more
At 19 years of age, Great Britain’s SHANAZE READE will go to Beijing this August as the Gold medal favorite in the new Olympic sport of BMX Racing  ...and she’s not nervous about it at all. On July 14th, Great Britain will officially announce their Olympic Cycling team - including the 2-person BMX squad (1 male / 1 female). With her incredible BMX skills, strength and speed, Shanaze Reade will no doubt be on the list as one of the UK’s best hopes for Gold.

MANUEL DeVECCHI/ITALY – click to read more

REDLINE, and their Italian bike distributor CICLIOMANIA, is pleased to announce that their sponsored Elite male, MANUEL DeVECCHI (pronounced Da Veck-EE), has earned the one and only spot given to ITALY for the 2008 Olympic’s BMX event. Making it to Beijing completes years of dedication, training and racing for the buffed Italian powerhouse. At the recent UCi World Championships in Taiyuan, China - DeVecchi not only won one of the 32 available Olympic start positions, but backed it up with a silver in Elite Cruiser on the final day.“This World Championship silver medal is indeed the highlight of an exceptional week. What an incredible emotion!” Now named to the Italian team, Manuel DeVecchi prepares for the ultimate emotions - of not only making the main event in Beijing, but also reaching the goal of a Podium finish.

DAMIEN GODET/FRANCE – click to read more
In early June, FRANCE became the first country to announce their BMX squad for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. REDLINE and French distributor SUNEX is pleased to proclaim that their sponsored Elite male DAMIEN GODET has made the cut. After his impressive finishes this past year in UCi Supercross events put him in probable contention, Godet clinched his confirmation by making the main event at the UCi World Championships (and placing 5th) in Taiyuan, China.
“I am so happy,” commented Damien after the French Cycling federation gave him the news. “It was very close between four of us for the selection! Everybody knew this race was very important for the Olympic qualifications, so there was added pressure. I made my first main at the World Championships but even then, I couldn’t be sure if it was enough for the selection. Now I just have to prepare THE big race.”

THE NETHERLANDS/REDLINE – DeWILDE, Van der BIEZEN, Van den WILDENBERG & KLAUS – click to read more
Much like the United States and Australia, the talent pool of fast BMX racers in THE NETHERLANDS runs deep. Three years ago, Dutch BMX legend Bas DeBever assembled the best BMX racers in Holland, and in 2006 they all hopped aboard Redline bicycles. Thanks to consistent finishes throughout the past two years, The Netherlands earned enough country points for the IOC to award them four positions to fill – 3 men and 1 woman. Representing The Netherlands will be Dutch Captain ROBERT DeWILDE, ROB Van den WILDENBERG and RAYMON Van der BIEZEN. In Elite Women, LIEKE KLAUS has been picked, with MARTIJN SCHERPEN chosen as the alternate. With such a strong field to chose from, DeBever’s final picks were based on results throughout the year and top performances at the most recent UCi World Championships.
For the past two years, Redline has been the official bike sponsor of The Netherlands BMX program. All of the Dutch Olympic riders will be aboard Shimano-equipped Redline Flight Pro XXL frames, custom painted in Dutch Orange. Their domination the past two years on the European BMX circuit has earned them the “Orange Crush” nickname.

Norway/Sebastian Kartfjord - Since this article was written, Sebastian Kartfjord, another Redline rider has made the grade as a last minute addition to the Olympic Field. Congrats to Norway's Finest!

AFRICA BMX CHALLENGE

From Monty Thackray - President, Zimbabwe BMX Association

As you all know I am very passionate about the sport of BMX, as most of us are. I started AFRICA CHALLENGE in 2006. The object of having this event in Zimbabwe was and still is, to promote the sport within the country and ultimately on the continent of Africa since only South Africa and Zimbabwe currently have BMX.

I will continue to promote AFRICA CHALLENGE despite our desperate times here in Zimbabwe and hope that one day our internal situation will improve and those of you that I know around the World will take the time to support us at sometime or another at our annual event.

This years event will be on Saturday 3rd October in our 2nd city of Bulawayo. Whilst the event will have prizes or the day it is also a SERIES event linked to an event in SOUTH AFRICA one week prior - Sunday 28th September, in Pietermaritsburg, Natal Province. Both events have prizes for the day but there will be overall Plates for ALL classes and a Cash Prize for the ELITE Class.

I attach for your information a copy of the Race Format containing the information about our race. For information about the South Africa Grand race please contact their President of Association = Mrs Margot Gerber (margot.gerber@telkomsa.net ). If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me on the above email address.

It is hoped that in 2009 we will host AFRICA Challenge in Zimbabwe in March, the week after the Supercross which is in South Africa, and in 2010 in Zimbabwe in August, the week after World Championships, again in South Africa. This way those of you who travel can get two events out of one trip out to Africa. I know that many of you will not attend this year but perhaps can now start planning forward for 2009 or 2010 and help us build BMX in Zimbabwe and Africa.

Thank you for your time and please pass on the Race Format document to those that you do know, with a copy to me for future promotion reference.

Yours in BMX, Monty Thackray - President, Zimbabwe BMX Association

BMX Race Report - ABA Great Salt Lake Nationals

Round #8 of the 2008 ABA Pro Series headed up to one of the best ABA tracks on the tour, Rad Canyon BMX in Salt Lake City, Utah. The track has gone through some recent changes, including a newly paved 1st and 2nd turn and a all new rhythm section. These additions to the already great track, helped make it one of the best tracks on the Pro tour and made for some of the best Pro racing this season.  Randy Stumpfhauser and Danny Caluag were on hand for the race action and here is how they finished up racing in Salt Lake City:

Danny Caluag had an incredible weekend in Salt Lake City. Danny, the 2007 ABA #1 Pro, has already had a great season with a slew of wins in both AA Pro and Pro Cruiser. Danny had the fans stoked on his custom painted Bawls Blue Intense Podium bike. On Day 1, Danny won both the AA Pro main event and Pro Cruiser races. On Sunday, Danny once again won Pro Cruiser and finished up 6th in AA Pro. Danny now has 6 wins in the AA Pro Class and 8 Wins in Pro Cruiser for 2008. Danny's Sponsors include Intense BMX, BAWLS Guarana, Fly Racing, Skull Candy, Shimano, THE Products, SINZ Racing, Intense Tyre Systems, OGIO, Cyto Sport, Thomson, Oakley, GO211.com, S & M Bars, and BMXpros.com

Randy Stumpfhauser had a god weekend in Salt Lake City. Things started out for him on Thursday with a great day at the Ogio Golf Tournament. On Friday, Randy traveled to a local bike shop and did a dealer appearance with his GT Team Mate Eric Rupe, Things really started to heat up for him on Saturday as he was up for the win in AA Pro come main event time. 1 bad race kept him to 5th for the day. That is how hard the AA Pro class is. On Sunday, Stumpy came back and took home a 2nd in AA Pro. Randy now gets ready for the NBL Grands, where he is going to be battling it out with Cristian Becerine for the NBL Pro title .Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Bombshell, ODI, Tangent, Fly Racing, Sinz, Shimano, GO211.com, OGIO, Cyto Sport, SDG, Toolshed, Sharp, and BMXPros.com

Might be someone with lots of power to make big decisions and will be impressed that BMX Racing is the most popular Cycling event that they show on TV in August.

Who knows?

As of mid afternoon on Monday the 28th, we at BMX Racing have twice as many votes as the other cycling disciplines, but don't let down your guard......Go Vote!

Click on the NBC Beijing Logo above or this link and scroll down to the bottom of the page to the "Get In To The Games" feature and cast your vote!

Big Back To School Sale From J&R!

Crupi’s Liam Phillips earns a trip to the Olympics!

Arcadia, California – Crupi Parts, Inc is proud to announce that Factory Elite Men Liam Phillips of England has earned a trip the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China!  Liam has been England’s big hope for the 2012 Olympics which will be in London, England.  However, Liam has recently stepped up his game and at the secret British Cycling trials event in Aigle Switzerland; Liam won all 4 time trial events putting him on top of England’s Olympic list for 2008.

Liam’s parents Pete and Sharon Phillips have been involved in BMX for many years and when they started some 12 years ago, they never imagined BMX could take their son to the Olympics.  This just goes to show you that hard work and dedication from both rider and family can really make a difference and take you just about as far as you are willing to go!

Liam will meet up with fellow Crupi team mate Scott Erwood of Canada to make their Olympic debut.  Join us in wishing the best of luck to Liam, Scott and all of the Olympic BMX athletes this August as they compete in the first ever BMX racing event in the Olympics.

Norway's Sebastian Kartfjord Wins Berth In Olympic Games

Norwegian BMXer, Sebastian Kartfjord, was notified, July 17th, by the UCI that he will fill a spot left open by a withdrawal by a country that had previously been awarded a spot in the BMX event at the Olympic Games. Kartfjord and Team Norway teammate, Anders Gronsund, left right away for the UCI "Olympic Lookalike" track at it's headquarters in Aigle, Switzerland where they are currently training Sebastian for The Games.

It had not been known if Anders would be allowed to attend the Games as an Alternate, but while in Switzerland, he found out that he would not be attending as an Alternate, but has continued to be a strong part of the team, pushing and stretching Sebastian as he prepares for his August trip.

Kartfjord will make the trip to Beijing after training in Aigle until July 27th, then will head back to Norway where he'll put together his hot lookin' custom painted "Olympic Redline" and get his big trip organized. Sebastian leaves August 11th for China where he will stay in an Olympic "precamp" until the Olympic Village is open for biz.

The Norwegian is the 30th public choice to be finalized for the first ever BMX Racing event in the Olympic Games, with only Hungary and China not being known at this time.

For more info on 'Sea Bass' and his Olympic efforts, you can visit his web site which is updated regularly, at www.sebastiankartfjord.com. You will not be able to follow SK.com after he moves in to the Olympic Village as all Olympic Athletes will be forbidden by Olympic rules to comment on any web sites at all until after the Olympic Games are over.

Big Money For The Ladies At ABA Star Spangled Nationals!

Canada's Scott Erwood Is Going To Beijing!

A few days after the fact, and Scott Erwood is still coming to terms with his accomplishment. “Even when my friends or parents say that I am an Olympic athlete, it is kind of weird hearing them say that,” Erwood said. “It is kind of sinking in slowly. “(But) it feels pretty sweet.”

Erwood, 20, will represent Canada in BMX at the Beijing Olympic Games next month. He earned that honour after defeating Alberta’s Jim Brown — a friend and road roommate — on Saturday in Chula Vista, Calif. at the Olympic Training Centre. The two were going head-to-head for the one spot Canada had for the Olympics in the men’s BMX competition. It came down to two time trial events and three races, with whichever ride won three getting the spot. Erwood won 3-0.

This is the first year BMX is being offered as an Olympic medal sport. Erwood, who grew up in Brookswood, got his start in competitive racing as a 12-year-old. He found quick success in the sport and was hooked. He actually got his start in motocross at age nine before his mom decided the sport was too dangerous. Next came racing quarter-midgets. The whole time, Erwood would bring his BMX bike along with him and ride when he wasn’t racing. He soon switched to BMX, joining the club at Langley BMX. “Ever since then, I have continued from there,” Erwood said.

Four years ago, he made the Canadian national team and Erwood has now won the past two national championships. “If someone had said you are going to the Olympics in four years, I would have said ‘you are full of it.’” Wearing the red and white and representing Canada is a great feeling. “I am proud wearing the Canadian jersey,” Erwood said. “Everyone likes Canadians so it is a good feeling when other countries are cheering for you.”

Erwood credits his parents, Bruce and Janet, for helping him get to this point. “Definitely my parents have been the biggest support,” he said. “If they hadn’t helped me out, I would not be where I am. “They would always push me to get out there and train harder and stuff like that.”

Erwood leaves for Switzerland on Sunday, where he will train for the next 20 days. After that, it will be a week of training in Taiyuan, China. and then off to Beijing. The BMX event will be held Aug. 20-21.

GHP - Factory News - Summer Nationals - Roseville, CA

Recently, the GHP Factory Team travelled to the ABA Sumer Nationals......and through the smoky sky appeared Oak Creek BMX. Home of this years ABA Summer Nationals and the first Pro series to be held in California.

Matt Zito, Factory GHP team manager, and the riders from Reno hit the rode to nor cal and put down some good laps and some serious racing.

Friday night started off with Justin "y-chi" Wike taking a much deserved 2nd in the A pro race during the 105 degree smoky weather. He came out hard and fast and was consistent all weekend, winning several motos  and finishing 5th on Saturday.

With the Nor-Cal temp gauge staying in the red, the weather didn't cool down any with Michael "Mayhem" Larson on the track. Mike has been on fire lately, showing improvement with every race and he finally pulled it of. First place. Going against the likes of Deak Brown, Travis Orasda and team mate Justin Wike. Mike finished saturday with lowest points putting him on top the podium. Sunday wasn't quite as kind to Mike, with the track getting slippery, mike fell victim to two wrecks and a second for seventh overall. It's not long now, we expect that he'll turn AA by the end of the year.

John purse and Robert Harris flew out to continue their beatings on the Vet Pro class. The Jackal was out front and looked to be a contender with his smooth and powerful style. John ended the weekend with a fourth and a fifth. Harris showed why he's earned the Factory GHP jersey by making his main both days and finishing with two sixth place finishes. These guys are serious pro's and show their professionalism both on and off the track, wherever they go.

Our amateur program is getting stronger each race with all riders making their cruiser mains and several wins. The big wins on the amateur side came from Jim "Hacksaw" Severt and Christian Martinez.

Jim won the 36 and over expert class on saturday. With this win Jim loses his Peppermint Patty nick name and Matt Zito loses a seven month bet. Matt was forced to eat a large pizza, by himself, as a result. Jim finished sunday just a hair behind The Coov. Congratulations to both Jim and Bob. To learn more about the bet and to see the aftermath - check out the link to Hacksaw's blog site -  http://teamhacksaw.wordpress.com/2008/07/17/matt-zito-and-the-pizza-bet/#more-106

Christian Martinez got his first win of the national season on saturday in the 17-20 cruiser class. He kept the momentum going into sunday and made an incredible pass in the main for the win over Cody Perales. Christian is powerful and made the main in 17-18 ex on saturday. This put him against the likes of Jacob Trevino, Kory Cook and the ABA's national number one amateur Nick Long. Martinez walked away with a hard earned 6th place. 6th out of 27 is nothing short of awesome.

Little 8 girl Stephanie Baldwin made all of her mains including making the 10 and under girls cruiser on Sunday. This was her first national racing the cruiser class and she battled with the big girls. 8th in cruiser and two 7th in class.

Zach Zito put in a strong weekend making 12 cruiser mains both days. Zach battled to a pair of 4th against some pretty fast  dudes, you know it's a fast class when the current world champ doesn't take first.

Dakota Baca also put in some awesome racing this weekend. He made both cruiser mains along with 11 x on saturday. Cruiser he finished with a 4th on saturday and 6th on sunday. He earned a 7th in class racing hard. With competing against likes of Jacob Abbe I would have to give Dakota a thumbs up for the weekend. Way to go Chewbacca - let's hear your wookie war cry each and every time you cross the finish line.

All in all it was a very successful weekend. The GHP crew is looking foreword to the Great Salt Lake Nationals in South Jordan UT. for a couple reasons. There the team will be able to use the Reno riders, formally factory Tabu, on the factory team sheet. This will give our sheet more depth and riders to choose from. Also just about all the GHP Factory riders will be in attendance including Greg Hill, so if your at the race stop by and check out the new GHP factory trailer and hang out for a while.

This report is brought to you by Matt "The Manager: Zito and Donald "Dead Last" Fisher.

GHP would like to thank all their sponsors for their support: Attomlab, 4L racing, Rockinrunner designs inc.,BMXMANIA.COM, PeterPaulPics, HPR designs, Troylee designs, Ciari, Swiss American bicycles, SIXSIXONE, FLY racing, and bmxactiononline.com

BMX Pros.com / Double A Marketing
BMX Race Report
NBL Music City Nationals & ABA Summer Nationals

The Summer BMX Racing season is in full swing and the top BMX pros in the world have had a busy Schedule so far in 2008. With the Olympics coming up for some and going after USA National titles for others, the Pros of the Double A Marketing squad have been at 100% for the past few months. Kyle Bennett and Cristian Becerine both have had their main focus on the Olympics, but both have made a run at the NBL title as well in 2008. Danny Caluag and Steven Cisar have been focusing on the ABA title as well as hitting some NBL events, and Randy Stumpfhauser has held the points lead for most of the season in the NBL. With some big races coming up in the next month, the guys are getting ready. Here is how the riders finished up over the past few weeks of racing:

Cristian Becerine went to Nashville 3rd in the NBL Pro points and was looking for a big weekend to give him a shot at the NBL title. Cristian looks forward to a huge August with the Olympics and then a shot at the NBL title and after the incredible weekend he had at the Music City Nationals, he is one step closer to getting his first US NBL Title. On Saturday, Cristian just missed the win as he finished up 2nd. On Sunday, Cristian put it all together and won the Elite Men's main event. With these 2 great finished, Cristian moves into the lead of the NBL Pro points chase, just ahead of Randy Stumpfhauser. Look for some great racing at the NBL Grands come late August to decided the 2008 Champion. Cristian's sponsors include Free Agent, KHS, Fly Racing, SINZ, Kenda, THE Products, ODI, Sun Ringle, Shimano, Cyto Sport, S & M bars, OGIO, Thomson, and BMXpros.com

Steven Cisar has gotten comfortable on his all new Haro Group 1 SR race frame in the short month that he has been on it. It was no where more evident that at the ABA Summer national in Roseville. On Saturday, Steven had his best finish ever in the AA Pro Class in the ABA with a huge 2nd place. On Sunday, Steven was once again looking strong, but one bad main event held him back to 5th overall in the days AA Pro result. Look for a lot of great things from Steven in the near future. Steven sponsors include Haro, Troy Lee Designs, Vans, Oakley, Intense Tyre Systems, SINZ Racing, Rockstar, Stealth Hubs, Alex Rims, S & M Bars, SDG, and BMXpros.com

Danny Caluag has had a busy few weeks. First at the ABA Summer Nationals, Danny finished up 4th in AA Pro and 1st and 2nd in Pro Cruiser. Danny currently holds the Points lead in AA Pro and Pro Cruiser in the ABA. At the NBL Music City Nationals, Danny had an off weekend and made the main event only on Sunday, where he finished up 8th overall. Danny's Sponsors include Intense BMX, BAWLS Guarana, Fly Racing, Shimano, THE Products, SINZ Racing, Intense Tyre Systems, OGIO, Cyto Sport, Thomson, Oakley, GO211.com, S & M Bars, and BMXpros.com

Randy Stumpfhauser has been off to his usual consistency, but still impresses his fans and keep the GT Ultra Box in the AA pro and Elite men's main events. At the ABA Roseville National, Randy was looking like he would be racing for the win both days, but come main time a few crashes held him back to 7th place overall each day. At the NBL event, Randy was just off both days, not making the main event. Randy sits in 2nd in the NBL Pro points and is getting ready for the last NBL Pro Points event on the Friday night before the Grands to make a sure to go head to head with Cristian for the NBL title. Randy's sponsors include GT Bicycles, Bombshell, ODI, Tangent, Fly Racing, Sinz, Shimano, GO211.com, OGIO, Cyto Sport, SDG, Toolshed, Sharp, and BMXPros.com

Music City BMX will also be prizing out a Gibson - Epiphone Les Paul Classic, signed by the pros, to one lucky winner along with 20 miniature replica guitars - Rock on!

Kuwahara/BAWLS Matt Pohlkamp turned the Pro Men’s standings upside down after stunning the critics with two huge wins at South Park. GT’s Randy Stumpfhauser still leads the men’s chase but Free Agent’s Cristian Becerine and Kyle Bennett have quickly narrowed the gap. Redline’s Kim Hayashi also won both races at South Park but still trails Race Place BMX’s Stephanie Barragan and Madison Pitts in Elite Women’s action.

In Master’s action, Free Agent’s Dale Holmes has resumed control of his destiny but Supercross’s Kenth Fallen is only 4 points back while Haro’s Logan Collins and Intense/Phantom On-Trac’s Kris Fox share the lead in Super-Ex.  With the NBL Grands less than two months away, the NBL Pro Series may be crowning as many as four new Champions this year.

ARNAUD DUBOIS GETS BELGIAN "OLYMPIC STAMP"

The Belgian Postal Service recently released a nationally distributed stamp commemorating BMX being an Olympic Sport for the first time ever.

The stamp has the only contending Belgian BMX Rider, with a chance to go to the Olympics, on it...........Arnaud Dubois.

Nice little "flattie", Arnaud, only one thing wrong......Arnaud's not going to the Olympics.

Under Belgian Olympic criteria/standards, Arnaud didn't make the BOC's grade, so he's staying home checkin' out his Olympic Stamp and watching the event on TV.

How ironic.

Evidently, they didn't have enough time to stop the presses, after the BOC made their decision, and now, even though he can't go, Arnaud will have his own stamp.

It's the wacky world of the Olympics, folks, hang on to your hats!

The UCI Announces Final Olympic Country Qualifying

Well.....All of the figuring and returning of Olympic spots is over and the UCI has officially announced the Final Country Qualifying figures. There were not a lot of surprises, but a couple of interesting things transpired in the whole process over the last few weeks.

Belgium earned a spot due to World Championship results but due to the only rider (Arnaud Dubois) in line, not meeting the Belgian Olympic Committee's 'Qualifying Criteria', they declined the spot which was picked up by Norway due to UCI Worlds Finish position, making some as yet announced Norwegian BMXer (Possibly, Sebastian Kartfjord?) quite happy. Hungary and Japan round out the men's reserve spots due to 1/8th final finishes at the UCI Worlds in Taiyuan, China in May. Hungary and Japan in the Olympics.......Who would have thunk it?

New Zealand earned two spots (Marc Willers consistent UCI SX finishes/World Points #5) but turned one of them back, and evidently will only send one men's Marc. BUT.....due to Sarah Walker's high points production over the year (World #1 Elite Women's Points and good UCI SX finishes) have qualified for and accepted two spots in the women's event, even though they have no other women's rider with UCI Supercross style experience. That ought to be interesting.

And in the only other final note of interest in the selections, China received a "by invitation only" selection in the women's event. No Chinese men in the men's event, though.

Check out the BMX Mania Olympic Race Report Page for the final listings and other Olympic good stuff. (Or click on the cute little Olympic BMX Mascot!)

2008 ABA Great Salt Lake Nationals Update

Rad Canyon BMX Gets Paved and BMXers Get Paid!

Rad Canyon BMX has been home to the ABA Great Salt Lake Nationals for over 10 years and for 2008 the Rad Canyon crew has stepped up their program yet again! One of the premier facilities in the country, Rad Canyon is always looking for ways to improve itself.

Along with the new track improvements the Rad Canyon crew would like to help out those who make the trek out to Utah. In cooperation with Maverick Country Stores and Rad Canyon BMX there will be over $500.00 in cash cards and prizes handed out during the 50/50 drawings over the course of the weekend.

Shimano PD-M647 Olympic Tuned BMX Pedals

Shimano in partnership with several of their sponsored racers have developed an Olympic “race tuned” specification of their PD-M647 pedal that meets the demanding requirements of world class BMX racers.

There are only 20 sets in the world and ten fortunate and deserving riders will get one pair each. A training pair and a race day pair.

This pedal is based on the PD-M647 platform and has been modified to assure that the rider does not unclip under the extreme power loads at the starting gate.

We specifically tuned the release angle and modified the “free float” resistance in respond of countless hours of test monitor feedback.

On top of that it has to be the greatest looking Shimano pedal ever.

This is just one of those cool things Shimano does to look out for there riders and continue to make great looking product.

Here's the story of one rider's struggle to bring BMX BACK to her homeland.......Even though she is living far, far away.....Rocio "RC" Colon

Northern Virginia BMX - Woodbridge, VA ..... I started racing BMX at the age of 10 in my country of origin, Peru, South America. My brother, a BMX racer, invited me to the track to see some races. I fell in love with the sport and started racing using one of his bikes.

A few months later I was invited to join a team called INKAS BMX, the best BMX team in Peru. I did really well and won all of my races. A short time later, I was invited to join TEAM PERU BMX, the national team of Peru, and competed at the 1988 World Championship in Chile. I placed 7th at the Worlds, not bad for being my first time at a huge event. Following Worlds, I appeared on Peruvian TV shows and was featured in newspaper articles.

I trained for two intense hours after school four times a week and raced in local events every weekend. It was awesome; our coach was a great trainer, but very strict. I raced in and won many championships in Peru. I raced internationally too with TEAM PERU, traveling to Colombia for a Continental Championship, Venezuela for a Pan-American Championship, and Brazil for a World Championship.

I was the Peruvian National Champion from 1988 to 1992, the year I moved to the U.S. My family moved to the U.S. for numerous reasons, not the least of which was the terrorism and danger in Peru during those years. My father was a congressman, and the threat of his being kidnapped was very real. Another reason for coming here was the opportunity to pursue a better education. Not speaking the language very well made starting over in a new country hard for all of us, but we made it through the good and the tough times. Although money was tight, I continued my BMX racing, joining the Winchester BMX team. I competed in a number of U.S. national races, which I found to be an exciting experience because of the new and tougher competition.

Due to different circumstances I quit BMX racing in 1994, with motherhood and marriage soon to follow. Earlier this year, my oldest son asked me to take him to the track to see a few races. He too fell in love with the sport and started racing -- I guess he wants to follow mom’s steps. I returned to racing too, although now as a 30-year-old married mother of four; some people say I’m crazy, but hey, it’s my hobby.

I have improved a lot since I first returned in April (of 2007); I can see the difference in my races and also in the way I feel. I joined a BMX team called Rocket BMX and am racing in two classes. The 17 & Over women’s class is very tough; I am competing with much younger, but awesome girls. I also am racing in the 30-34 ladies cruiser (cruiser bike), my age class but still a lot of great competition which I enjoy very much. I have won many local races and attended National races.

Last September, I raced the finals of the Northeast Regional Championship and got 2nd place in the 17 & Over women’s class. In October I won 1st place at the Virginia State Championship Series. I couldn’t believe it! This was a big accomplishment for me and I was extremely happy.

I have some goals set in mind that I want to accomplish. I’m planning to attend many Nationals this 2008 season so I can accumulate points for my National and Regional Standings in both of my BMX classes; however, I am focusing more on my cruiser class this season.

Another goal I have in mind, even though I live there now, is to someday represent Peru at an International Championship. BMX racing in Peru is returning after a 14 year absence. It was stopped in 1993 due to disagreements some parents had with the league. During a reunion of the old school BMX Peru racers in August, I mentioned my return to racing, which sparked interest in reviving the sport.

The BMX track in Lima was remodeled and races began in December. The rebirth of the Peruvian BMX racing is a dream come true to all of us old school BMX Peru racers. BMX is a tough, extreme sport. Like in many other sports, when you fall, you fall hard. When you do fall though, you just get back up. Even though now I don’t heal as fast as when I was a little kid, I still love the sport. I guess I’m just a tough and crazy BMX mom. — Rocío

BMX Mania "Europorter" Sez, BMXers Will Want To Watch Samuel On The "Tour"!

Generally, our Europorter doesn't get too excited about the Tour de France because:
- it's not as cool as BMX
- Way too many Americans and too few Frenchies have won it the past 10 years
- He's been there (on the side of the road), done that ( cheering) and got the T-Shirt

But yesterday's win was a little bit different:

Samuel Dumoulin, who won the stage after a 130ish-mile "echappee" (We're guessing that means BATTLE, in French, since we are unsophisticated Yankees here!) with 3 other riders, is a former BMX champion from the Lyon area of France.

Like Damien Godet- and specifically from Givors, the original home track of our veteran BMX Maniac, Christophe BOUL :

The artist didn't wait long to celebrate this amazing victory by "doodling" his support for Samuel. ( see pic)...  He's not the first BMXer to win a stage though, remember Robby McEwen?

No Arnaud Dubois At The Olympics!

BMX Mania Editor's Note - I don't "editorialize" much here at BMX Mania, but this is a GREAT example of someone making a decision who (It would appear to me) knows absolutely NOTHING about BMX.

Arnaud Dubois is one of the best BMX riders in the world. He's made UCI Supercross Finals, and has in fact made the podium under tough "Olympic Like" conditions at UCI SX finals. I personally think that he could podium at the Olympics, along with a gazillion other of the fine athletes, just like him. Congrats to the Belgian Cycling Federation who have worked hard and long at supporting Arnaud in his racing over the last four years, we've watched them "pay their dues", make sacrifices and do the HARD work that it takes to support a GREAT rider like Arnaud......Good job, Ellen Bollansée and her outstanding team of BMX Folks!

Sorry, we can't say that about the Belgian Olympic Committee........Someone at the Belgian Olympic Committee needs to have their head examined! Read on, if you can stand it! - Jerry Landrum/BMXmania.com

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

From Ellen Bollansee, Belgian Team Manager - Belgian BMXer, Arnaud Dubois finally got the news from the UCI that there is a place for him at the Olympic games in Beijing.

But doesn't get permission from the Belgian Olympic committee.

Because Belgium was on the 14th place in the Men's nation ranking, Arnaud Dubois had to get his spot for the Olympic Games at the UCI World Championships in China at the end of May.

Dubois got a disappointing 6th place in the 1/8 final and wasn't sure to get an Olympic ticket until last Wednesday.

At that time the UCI confirmed that Dubois got his Olympic spot. But the Belgian Olympic committee decided that Arnaud Dubois can't go to Beijing in BMX because he didn't meet the "Belgian criteria" that they had set.

According to the Olympic Committee, he had to get a Top 8 spot in the final ranking of the European championships 2007 or 2008 or a Top 16 spot at the worlds in 2007 or 2008.

Dubois ended the Euro season with 10th place at this years European championships and got 9th, by one point behind Henrik Balterzen at last years European Championships.

The Belgian Olympic committee decided that this was not enough against the defense and advice of Team Coach, Ellen Bollansée who supported Arnaud Dubois for the last 4 years and who defended the presence of Arnaud Dubois at the Olympics.

Arnaud himself is very disappointed with this decision.

We hope Arnaud has enough courage to prove that he did deserve this chance. We will definitely see him at the next European and World Championships and who knows......stronger than ever at the Olympics in 4 years.

Kind regards, Ellen Bollansée / Belgian BMX Team Manager

NBL Keystone National Team Challenge

Trilogy Park BMX in conjunction with Valley Forge Convention & Visitors Bureau and Texas Roadhouse are proud to announce the addition of over $5000 in team payouts for the NBL Keystone National in August.

The National and Team NBL team payouts will be bumped up an extra $1250 each day plus the normal NBL payouts for the top 3.

On top of the extra money there is going to be a bonus of $500 for the team in both divisions with the highest combined points for both days.

Wouldn't the extra money come in handy for the Grands?

You can't win it if you don't show up.

Intense/Phantom/On-Trac Victorious in South Park!

South Park is a legendary BMX track for anyone who has been around the BMX community for a while and it was with great pleasure the Intense/Phantom/On-Trac NBL squad dropped in to pay a visit and try out the legendary fast track for ourselves.  As the last team race before the NBL Grand Nationals, the team needed a couple of solid wins to establish a lead in the NBL Factory title hunt trying to unseat the 9 times winning Dan’s Competition squad AND win the Factory title in both sanction; a feat not done since the glory days of GT!.  And that’s just how the weekend went down.  Mother Nature spared everyone Friday and most of Saturday and every rider on the Intense/Phantom/On-Trac team took care of his or her business and the squad should head into Louisville in a competitive position to vie for the NBL title.

Kris Fox in Super-Ex has developed - no earned - a reputation as one of the smoothest riders on any track.  Kris won virtually every moto on Saturday and on the rare occasion he was behind, his track speed had him flying by anyone between him and the finish line.  In the main, he found himself elbow-to-elbow with a very determined David Oquendo from Dan’s and Oquendo was able to stave off Kris’ attacks on the track for the win, giving Kris 2nd.

In 17-18X, Nic Long was all banged up after flat-bottoming HARD between the 3rd and 4th obstacle on the 2nd straight in practice Friday afternoon.  The ground shook all the way in the stands and Nic was in bad shape Saturday morning.  Nic, however, is made of stern stuff and toughed the day out without complaint putting together an exciting win in the main where he went through the am section and the second place rider tried to take the win through the pro set which looked like how the race would go down until Nic hit the “super-charge” button and cut him off hard carving out of the am section and straight to the finish line for the win.

In 15X, the Conman, Connor Fields was untouchable all weekend pulling away from everyone and styling through the pro set.  In two visits to South Park, Connor has yet to lose a lap and on Saturday he took home the win with ease.

14X Rusty Nesvig looks to be returning to form as he dominated the moto rounds.  Things took a different turn when in semis local rider Damien Cherepko swooped through the pro section while Rusty cruised through the am being conservative knowing the team needed his win.  Rusty’s eyes must have gone big when the local talent zoomed in front of him for the semi win.  In the main, Rusty knew he needed to separate himself from Damien and the rest of the 14X’s and established a BIG lead ensuring no-one would catch him.

Carolina’s finest, Cole Tesar put on a show of his own, as well.  Cole’s powerful pedaling and evolving jump skills led him to victory in 12X notching a nice win for himself and for the team.  And Cole’s mom, as always, wins “Mom of the Race” breaking out the P, B & J, tuna helper and other healthy snacks keeping the “tanks” of the riders full and raring to go while Dad wrenches it up keeping everyone’s bikes rolling.  In fact, the Carolina’s were extremely well represented not just by the Tesar’s but also with the Hines team and family who were in the house cracking everyone up, keeping things light and having a good ole time.  Sadly, Chase Hines took a nasty spill and took on 17 stitches from which we hope he heals quickly.  Get well soon, Chase!

And last, but by no means least, we come to Felicia Stancil.  For those of you who wonder about the future of women’s BMX, look right here.  While most of the Elite Women were rolling the doubles and triples at South Park, this lovely young 13 year old woman was not only clearing them with ease, but manipulating the bike in the air getting her nose down and taking backside.  Folks – Felicia is THE “real deal”.  Felicia takes care of 13 Girls and does her job for the team with ease and a coy little smile.

Sunday rolled around and despite a valiant effort by the volunteers, no amount of raking, kitty-litter and air-blowers could stop the rain’s constant appearances and the race was called, a decision cheered by the crowd, at 10:30 a.m.  Saturday’s scores were doubled for Sunday.

As a result, Intense/Phantom/On-Trac notched a pair of 92’s for the weekend moving us into the NBL Factory lead with a score of 908, if we’ve figured it right.  Dan’s also gained a few and sit six points behind in second with 902.  Remember, “All calls are unofficial pending the NBL’s verification!”.  This sets up a great season finale in Louisville, Kentucky at the NBL Grands where Dan’s Comp will be out in force striving to hold on to their title and Intense/Phantom/On-Trac will be working to win the first leg of a dual-sanction victory for ‘08!   And no-one can count out Felt, OFR or the other formidable opponents we’ll be facing.   Should be fun, huh?  Watch for all the race action on www.go211.com

BAWLStyle.com Race Report: Matt Pohlkamp Wins BIG in South Park!

June 30, 2008 – BAWLS BMX Pro Matt “Ruckus” Pohlkamp turned up the BOUNCE in a HUGE way on one of the most challenging tracks out there– the NBL Stars N’ Stripes Nationals at South Park BMX – for his first NBL Elite Series win of the year!

Matt is pumped for this big win, which puts him in the run for a top spot in the NBL Elite rankings! “Pittsburgh is one of the best races of the year, FAST downhill track filled with a lot of big jumps…one race that I've always wanted to win,” Matt commented.

The Stars N’ Stripes Nationals was rained out on Sunday due to severe weather, so according to NBL rules on rainouts, Saturdays score will also count for Sunday. One heck of a weekend!

Matt has had a great summer so far! In addition to his win in South Park, Matt’s one-of-a-kind BAWLS Cherry helmet and Kuwahara jersey are all over this month’s edition of BMX Plus! and he’ll be hitting up this week’s BMXmania.com Pro Training Camp on July 2-4 at Hire Park BMX in Warsaw, IN!
