Benefit Event for Hodgkin's Lymphoma patient Paul Wassenaar

From BMX Mania Special Correspondent / Robert De Wilde - 2 Moths ago 19 Year old and Bellflower A-Pro local Paul Wassenaar was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Paul is already undergoing treatment.

Paul and the rest of the family are well known in the BMX world and specially in Southern California.

Last Saturday Bellflower BMX organized a benefit race and clinic to show the Wassenaar family their support and help ease the burden.

The event started off with a 2 hour clinic.

A total of 22 Pro's donated 2 hours of their time to give the riders a once in a lifetime experience.

Who doesn't want to ride with 2 time gold medalist Maris Strombergs, former UCI Elite World Champions and ABA/NBL National Champions.

I think it is safe to say that this was the biggest group of pro instructors ever.

Tammy (Bellflower BMX Track Operator) lost count around 60, she estimates about 100 riders attended in the BMX clinic.

Around 190 riders signed up for the race.

After 3rd round there was a huge raffle. A lot of BMX companies donated product for the raffle. All raffle tickets were sold.

All together the event was a great success.

Bellflower BMX would like to thank all the sponsors that gave back to the BMX community. Keep them in mind when you are out and about to buy new product.

All the Pro's that helped with the clinic. Last but not least, everybody that made the trip down to Bellflower BMX to show their support to Paul Wassenaar.

The Wassenaar Family is very grateful and humbled with everything.

Alias MX teams up with GHP BMX to do battle on BMX World Circuit!

Born from a passion for racing and all things motocross, ALiAS strives to set a new standard as they enter the BMX world. They do this through innovation, function, quality, and design.

Founded in November 2011, ALiAS partnered with the GEICO Honda race team just a few weeks into the brand’s inception, giving designers the opportunity to develop and test the new race wear with some of the sport’s top athletes: Justin Barcia, Eli Tomac, Justin Bogle, Wil Hahn and Josh Grant.

For 2014 ALIAS has teamed up with a man who has eleven pro championship titles, 4 NORA cups and is in all four BMX Hall of fame, Greg Hill. ALIAS approached Greg looking for input for their new BMX specific race pants. The result is the lightest BMX specific race pants on the market. In return ALIAS has become GHP’s 2014 uniform sponsor.

Look for the debut of the full line of ALIAS BMX gear at the 2014 USABMX Grand nationals.

USA Cycling Devo Wrap: Wrapping up the final Junior BMX Development Camp of 2013

The USA Cycling National Development Program (NDP) may be winding down its events for the 2013 calendar year, but the seeds for a successful 2014 are sown daily throughout the year.

The latest example of that is the final BMX Junior Development Camp of 2013 that recently wrapped at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

The third BMX Junior Development Camp of the 2013 calendar year was held from Sept. 30-Oct. 6.

The camp, which featured a mix of first-time and returning campers, was run by coach Arielle Martin, assistant coach Stan Horton, and rider coach Jordan Miranda. Special guest instructors included former professional BMX riders Steve Veltman and Dr. Jason Richardson.

High Performance Director of Sprint Jamie Staff and National BMX Coach James Herrera were present at the camp in supervisory roles.

"This has been the most progressive and motivated group I've had all year," Martin said. "Every single one of the riders has pushed themselves and made gains this week and it's been fun to watch.

It was really exciting to see Ryan Pettigrew and Lexa Jones lay down the fastest male and female time trial laps we've seen all year. No doubt we will be seeing some of these kids moving through to the Evolution and elite programs."

For the first-time participants, the camp represents an opportunity to experience the difference in tracks compared to domestic racing, especially the start hill. The returners displayed to Staff a big improvement from their first visit and their continued interest in becoming the next Connor Fields.

The participants rode primarily on the replica Beijing Olympics Supercross track in Chula Vista.

"This is perhaps the best group of young athletes I've seen in recent camp history," Herrera said. "Everyone was charging the track this morning and great progression was seen throughout the group."

Staff, who won the 1996 BMX world championship, talked to the riders about the extra effort necessary to compete internationally. He also educated the riders on the importance of maintaining a nutritious diet and proper workout technique in the gym.

Staff would like to thank USA BMX for running the qualifying events for these camps. He would also like to thank Chase Bikes, Tioga Tires and Ikonix for their valuable contributions to the program.

Below is a list of the riders who participated in the camp:

Juniors Men - Christopher Abernathy (Alpine, Calif.) ... Michael Boyle (Boise, Idaho/Eight 01-Extreme BMX Pro) ... Ponton Cary (Winchester, Va./Powers Bike Shop) ... Makieva Hopson (North Las Vegas, Nev./Vendetta-Elite Bicycles) ... Damian Ontiveros (Fremont, Calif./510 Bay Area BMXers) ... Austin Palasota (Saint Peters, Mo.) ... Ryan Pettigrew (Watsonville, Calif./Jr Bicycles.com-Speedco) ... Benjamin Roberts (Wheaton, Ill.) ... Jacob Williams (Sandy, Utah/Teraflex Jeep Mods) ... Uhl Woods (Benbrook, Texas) ... Justin Yaggy (Isanti, Minn.)

Juniors Women - Courtney Atwater (Phoenix, Ariz.) ... Elida Beeman (Lansing, Mich.) ... Shayla Blackmore (Durango, Colo./Phoenix Factory Racing) ... Lexa Jones (Peoria, Ariz.) ... Kaeli Lixandru (Phoenix, Ariz.) ... Crystal Schwartz (Harris, Minn.) ... Jenna Spracher (Hampton, Va.)

Check out a huge photo gallery from the camp, featuring pictures of the riders on the track, in the classroom and learning from Martin.

BMX Racing Great, Eddy King seriously injured!

BMX Mania News Note - BMX Racing Great, Eddy King of Factory Diamondback fame took a nasty spill on his mountain bike this past weekend and is in serious condition in the hospital.

We picked up this story from his family on Eddy's CaringBridge account and dropped it in here for you. Please keep Eddy in your thoughts and prayers as he battles some pretty gnarly recovery after this serious accident.

Eddy is very much "BMX Approved" and is very much in our prayers here at BMX Mania World HQ. 'Stay Strong', King Eddy, we know you can do it! - Jerry Landrum/BMXmania.com

From www.caringbridge.org/visit/eddyking/mystory, check it out and keep up with Eddy's Story, he'll be fightin' hard! - Eddy went over the bars on his mountain bike at Big Bear, California on Sunday, Oct 6, 2013, and was airlifted to the hospital. He was banged up pretty badly.

As of Monday at 3pm, he has undergone surgery on his spine and has regained some feeling in his legs. Eddy has a great attitude and asks for everyone's prayers and good energy during his healing process.

His phone was destroyed in the crash, so he is incommunicado for a little bit. We wanted to get the word out in case anyone had been trying to reach him and hadn't gotten a response.

Eddy and his loved ones are eternally grateful to all of the awesome people who have been taking care of him throughout his ordeal. He was very fortunate to have been riding with a great crew and happened to be followed down the hill by an emt who helped to stabilize him just after his accident.

We would like to thank (sorry if we missed anyone!). Robbyn, Eli, Patrick, James, Kevin, Don, the rescue patrol at Snow Summit, the hospital staff at Bear Valley, the helicopter team, and everyone at the trauma center who is taking stellar care of him.

We would especially like to thank Scott Durkin the EMT, who was definitely in the right place at the right time- he helped to stabilize Eddy's condition and helped to prevent further possible damage that could have happened. Stay Strong!

We will post updates on this page (www.caringbridge.org/visit/eddyking/mystory) rather than Facebook so that everyone can stay appraised of Eddy's progress.

A LITTLE REFLECTION ON A REAL PRO!

It's a 'tender time' in the Landrum residence, sometimes referred to as "BMX Mania World HQ".

Wednesday, October 2 my mother passed away at the Vet Pro age of 103! Ruby Landrum lived with Jerry and Kathy Landrum for fourteen years after a lifelong career in nursing and helping people.

Besides raising "Jerry Mania" and keeping me under control over the decades, she was known to help out BMX, our local track Hire Park BMX, BMX Mania and my passion for BMX that has driven me to do what I do.

I never could have brought this web site to the level that it is at without her.

Since my wife, Kathy and I have both been blessed to have many awesome BMXers come thru our house, Mom has gotten to know and care for many of them as houseguests and 'couch mates'. She's world famous for her favorite snack of Chips and Grapes while reading her library books or watching Price Is Right on the TV!

It has been my honor to care for her, love her and now it's time to say goodbye! So, BMX Mania will be on hold for a few days as we honor, love and celebrate Ruby's Homegoing to be with her beloved Jesus.

Rest in Glory, Mom, we love you! - Jerry Landrum/BMXmania.com

Chase BMX's, CONNOR FIELDS WINS

UCI BMX WORLD CUP TITLE!
The 2013 UCI World Cup tour headed to Chula Vista, CA on September 26, 2013 after the season long zig zag of BMX racing around the world. A new overall Champion was to be crowned, and Connor Fields was looking for some redemption from the 2012 season, where he just missed out on the overall title, finishing 2nd.

Things started off on Friday with the time trial and Connor has become the King of Time trials, with not only being the back to back TT World Champion, but also usually being the fastest rider at each World Cup at the end of the day. Coming into the race, Connor sat 14 points out of the overall World Cup lead, after a disaster of a race at stop #3 in Holland, where he did not make the main event. Connor started off with a great run in his time trial, finishing 2nd overall, behind his team USA teammate Corbin Sharrah. The top 16 riders then moved onto the SuperFinal and in his lap, he had the fastest lap of the day, taking the win, and more importantly taking back the overall seasons points lead!

When racing kicked off on Saturday. Connor looked to be the one to beat, as he was out front of each and every lap he raced in the earlier qualifiers. Making his way through the 3 rounds of motos, the race turns into single elimination laps, and once again, the skill and speed of Connor shined through, as he was victorious each and every lap once again.

As the riders finished up the semi finals, Connor knew what he had to do to win the season long overall title – Not finish last. For him this was a huge amount of pressure lifted off of him, but if you know Connor, he wanted to do nothing more than win this event not only in front of his friends and family, but he wanted to put a stamp on his season and take the only North American stop of the World Cup tour. As the gate dropped for the main event, Connor again had a strong start, but Sam Willoughby did as well and as the two were ready to dive into turn number one, neither wanted to back off. Connor then did ever so slightly, as he knew a 2nd would secure him the title, but the race doesn't end in turn 1 and he could have a shot at the win elsewhere. Someone else with the same mindset was Tory Nyhaug, as he dove on Connor, just getting under him, relegating Connor to 3rd. Going down the 2nd straightaway, Connor looked like he was going to be able to get back past Tory, but the wide bodies Nyhaug did his best to prevent that. Connor was settle into the 3rd spot for the rest of the lap, know he would be crowned the new champion as they crossed the line. It was one of the best main events of the 2013 season and a great way for Connor to cap of his championship season, standing on the podium once again!

Winning his first overall title of his young Pro Career was quite satisfying for Connor ” Last season I had the power and skills to win, but I was mentally as strong as I needed to be to do so. Working with the USA Cycling staff for this past season has been the main difference for me to overcome any situation out on the track and taking home this title has really shown me I have made all the right choice.”

All of us at the BMX Racing Group want to congratulate Connor on his first of many titles and we now shift over to the USA BMX tour for the last few remaining events, where Connor currently sits 2nd overall in the Elite men's series.
