Not sure what you are proposing as the other alternative, but if the car is in otherwise good condition, I would recommend putting a rebuilt transmission into it, as opposed to a new one.

I've got 245,876 miles on my 2001 Bonneville and it still runs well. I'd buy your car and have the tranny rebuilt if that's the answer you're looking for.
