Is motorcycle exhaust wrap bad?

I know ive heard it good for better back pressure but my mechanic said that moisture gets underneath it and will cause your exhaust to rust. True?

Exhaust wrap goes on the outside of the pipe and does nothing to alter the back pressure on the exhaust system. All Exhaust wrap does is insulate the hot pipe. It is useful when the hot exhaust pipe runs too near your leg. Yes, exhaust warp can trap moisture inside the wrap and prematurely rust the pipe.

Whoever told you that clearly knows absolutely nothing about motorcycles. You can ignore anything else they ever tell you.

Exhaust heat wrap (the clue is in the name...) is used to reduce the temperature radiated by the headers and keep the rest of the system hotter, by spreading the heat further along the exhaust. In a highly tuned engine, this will help to boost performance. For an everyday bike like yours, it serves no useful purpose at all and it is purely cosmetic.

Heat wrap will hold moisture and it will increase the development of rust on the exhaust.

Most of the exhaust wraps I've seen lately are on already rusted mufflers. I use beer cans and hose clamps on a couple of my rust holed cans. Fancy $$ wraps for occasional leg protection for bare legs may make a 'style' sense- knee high boots with long make safety sense. Heating/HVAC shops have aluminum 'tape' that is sold by roll or foot in different widths and has adhesive covered with a plastic or waxed paper- get enough to cover rust holes and 2 or 3 wraps around check fit- then peel off the backing as you wrap it around rusty can and firm press the layers, wait an hour and ride- hose clamp on wrap is extra insurance. Shafty rallies used to have a few show up that way toward end of season- the Rat Bikes have more..

Largely; anything that can hold any moisture or is exposed to moisture in contact with metal will cause corrosion or rust.

exhaust wrap has nothing to do with back pressure.

yes rust might be a prolbem if the bike is not under covered parking
