My eyes are in motion 100% of the time, probably hitting one or the other mirror between the 5 and 10 second times listed. I do check the rear more as traffic gets heavier.
While my mirrors are adjusted for no blind spots, I do believe in and use the "lifesaver" as well.
While changing lanes, make certain that there are no other drivers getting in your way in the lane where you chose to transfer. For that reason I keep checking the rearview mirror and side mirror to spot other cars in the road that might get in my way.
"Aproximately every 10 seconds and everytime you are about to change direction, accelerate or slow down -- Timbo, motorcyclist
I also ride, in Los Angeles. I watch approximately every five seconds, unless forward requires full attention. These glances are to keep watching all of the traffic around you -- forward, to the sides, to the rear.
If you do not, I strongly you do not ride a motorcycle -- you *will* need the protection of a steel safety cage ("cage", as known as a "car")
If you are going to change lanes, look and also turn your head to see the blind spot. Otherwise, when no one is close to your vehicle you can glance at one or the other when you feel like it. Don't overdue it tho, eyes should be looking forward 99% of the time.
Since there is no standard number of times you should do this....and this question makes no sense
I'm just going to say A LOT
every 5-7 seconds both sides
Aproximately every 10 seconds and everytime you are about to change direction, accelerate or slow down
once every hour or two.
