Monster Products joins BMXultra.com's BSX2014!
Bicycle Supercross (BSX), the world’s largest annual one-on-one BMX race, is delighted to announce that leading audio lifestyle brand Monster Products has signed on as the title partner for BSX 2014. Announcing the partnership, event founder, Shane Jenkins said he was delighted that Monster Products – managed and distributed throughout Australia by Convoy International – had agreed to team up with BSX to help raise funds for Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. “When I look back over the short history of the event I feel very proud that we have been able to work with so many amazing people to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. Not only have we previously worked with Australian cycling icons such as Tour de France winner, Cadel Evans and Australian Women’s Athlete of the Year, Caroline Buchanan, we have also partnered up with a number of industry leaders. I’m very excited that we will be working with Monster Products for 2014.”

Held in January each year, BSX is many things, but most importantly, it is a festival/celebration of BMX and BMX racing culture. Top professional and amateur athletes from across Australia and around the world gather around a specially designed track for a massive BBQ in the name of fun. All funds raised through auctions and raffles are donated to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation to purchase much-needed medical equipment. Mr. Jenkins added, “With Monster Products on board, we have created a new trophy, the ‘Monster Products Hot Lap Award’. There will be two awards; one for the Men’s and one for the Women’s time trial classes. While the time trial has always been a highlight of the event, it’s now set to become a real feature.”

As part of their involvement, Monster Products and Convoy International will be donating thousands of dollars’ worth of headphones to be auctioned off on the day. Sohan Karunaratne, Head of Marketing at Convoy International – the premier importer, distributor and marketer of various audio lifestyle brands including Monster Products – said, “We’re excited to be working with BSX on their charity event in January as it’s for a fantastic cause. Monster is dedicated to creating products that deliver incredible sounding audio, whether you listen to relax or get ready for a race, so we’re looking forward to recognising top competitors in this event with the new Monster Products Hot Lap Award.”

Mr. Jenkins went on to say, “With over $32,000 raised to date, BSX has been able to make a significant contribution to a wonderful foundation. By having Monster Products on board for this year’s event, we are aiming to set the bar even higher”.

Tyler Whitfield had gate one for the main after Olijuwon Davis got beat by Brandon Ceslok in his semi to lose lane choice. Whitfield, ,Davis and Ceslok went into the first turn in the main bar to bar with each other as their momentum carried them up the berm.

McDowell from lane 4 was able to cut to the inside and exit the first turn even with Whitfield pushing him a little toward the top. No contact was made but both riders were drifting to the outside at the exit of turn one.

Then Whitfield tapped the top of the step up with his front wheel where the loose dirt and white line are and it shot him over the bars crashing hard right on his head.

Davis chased McDowell but couldn't catch him at the line. Crashes in the semis took out Zack Rothfahn who might have ended up breaking his arm and a 4 bike crash in semi 2 took Corey Ross out who was tied for the point lead after the first round of motos.

Clayborn/HRPdesigns/Fastenal Factory Racing, year in review

It has been a long season on the National BMX circuit and it’s time to catch everyone up with how the Clayborn/HRPdesigns/Fastenal Factory Squad has done this year.

First and foremost, the team would like to give a heartfelt “Thank You for your support” to the Team’s Sponsors this year Richard @ Clayborn, Stuart @ HRPdesigns, Chris @ FASTENAL, Ray @ Fly Racing, Gus @ Profile Racing and Natarsha @ Answer BMX. The opportunities the team was able to offer, to these amazing racers, would not have been possible without you.

In 2013 the Team represented at 20 National weekends throughout the US including, Tulsa, OK; Louisville, KY (Twice); Phoenix, AZ; Tampa, FL; Dallas, TX; Atlanta, GA; West Monroe, LA; Charlotte, NC; Albuquerque, NM; Nashville, TN; Severn, MD; Pittsburgh, PA; Las Vegas, NV; East Moline, IL; Kingston, NY; and Toledo, OH Clemmons, NC for the Redline Cup East Coast Championships'

Wrapping up the year, it was Orlando, FL for the Disney Cup and the team finished the year off back in Tulsa, OK for The Presidents Cup/Race of Champions and the Grand Nationals, which for the second year in a row set the record for the largest BMX race ever held.

The 12 rider squad has been featured in 105 main events and earned 38 podium finishes, 11 wins, 14 – 2nd places, and 13 – 3rd places. Highlighted by Chris Kennedy’s “Perfect” weekend in East Moline, IL, 4 classes entered and 4 wins for the weekend; Logan Hair’s near perfect weekend in West Monroe, LA, winning 3 out of 4 events.

Who could forget Lola Petillo standing on the 3rd Place Podium at the USA Cycling Amateur National Championship in Nashville, TN and finally Bryce Yeager’s battle for 3rd place at the Nashville National in, quite possibly the hardest class in BMX, 16 expert.

This was the first year of Clayborn and HRPdesigns combining forces for a Factory effort and we look for bigger and better things in 2014 as this team continues to evolve. - Stuart Harrison/HRPdesigns.com

Answer/Rennen adds Maltezos

I am very happy to announce the signing of 36-40X Davey Maltezos to the Answer/Rennen family.

One of my personal greatest achievements in racing came at the age of 15 racing locally in Rhode Island against Davey. He was a northeast factory superstar having ridden for teams such as Coke Cola/Bikes N More and Cannondale/Ross. On the national level back then he would bang bars with the best of them such as Robbie Miranda, Kevin Tomoko and Randy Stumpfhauser.

On the local level he and I would go to battle twice a week at our local track Rocky Hill. I would win and then he would, it almost always came down to who had the inside gate. At nationals he would smoke me by over a straightaway, I had local track hero syndrome and couldn't pull it together at a national, Davey though was true badass.

Both Davey and I spent plenty of time over a berm or two back in the day usually due to one of us getting aggressive towards the other. In the summer of 1992 (21yrs ago) I was able to win the 15 Expert Rhode island state championship from him coming down to the final main where we tied in points but I had the better final race finish. (note the plate in our picture)

As the years went on Davey went on to earn NBL #2/3 and has made the main in 18+ men at the worlds in both Colombia and England against the likes of some of the legends in the sport who went on to great pro success. In 1997 Davey took time away from the sport to focus on his career and raising his daughter.

Fast forward to 2013 and Davey has been back on the scene the last few years and has gotten his groove back on the national race circuit. He most recently won the 2013 USABMX Grands in 36-40X. He is more focused than ever and with a solid support system and team by his side he is ready to capture his first ever #1 title. The journey starts now and I am happy to have my friend and former nemesis representing the best brands in the Industry.

Bonus coverage: I added pics of Davey and I at 15 and 16 racing each other please note the 1-3/8 wheels he rode up to the age of 17, who does that nowadays???

Welcome to the team Davey! - George Costa - Answer/Rennen BMX Team

Old Skool buddies, Davey Maltezos (21) and George Costa (69C) back together in action on the award winning Answer / Rennen BMX team!

Rest In Peace.....Diamondback BMX!
Editor's Note from Jerry Landrum/BMXmania.com .... Here're some words today from Diamondback Pro, Nate Berkheimer about the passing of one of the great names in BMX, Diamondback. The first good race bike that I ever got for my son back in the 80's when he and I were first beginning to race BMX was a Diamondback, he actually only ever rode Diamondbacks during his BMX involvement. DB was also the home of many great pro riders over the years, and the quality of the bikes were never doubted. Also, Diamondback and Mike Hammond have been big supporters of BMXmania.com over the years, and for that we say......THANKS from BMXmania.com, you will be missed!

From Diamondback BMX Pro, Nate Berkheimer - Rumors are all over the BMX world about Diamondback pulling the plug on the BMX program for next year and beyond. I wish I could say it wasn’t true, but you’ve heard right. The brand is heading in a different direction and BMX unfortunately isn’t along for the ride.

The BMX program at DB has been going longer than most BMX brands have even existed, they will always be involved in BMX in some way, it’s their roots since 1978. Everyone at the headquarters rides bikes, and most are pretty damn good, but they are running a business, and this is the repercussion.

During the past 8 years with Diamondback I have had so much fun on my bike, I’ve been on some of the best trips of my life, and made countless friends and memories along the way. The DB crew has been more supportive of my crazy BMX career than I could have ever hoped for. From racing AA to competing in the Dew Tour, they’ve always had my back. I’ve proudly endorsed the brand since day one and it’s definitely sad for me to see it go.

Ive experienced so much with the brand and have made great friendships within the company. Huge thanks to everyone that’s helped me out along the way, especially brand manager Mike Hammond. He is one of my favorite dudes to ride with and an all around solid guy. He believed in my riding even when I sometimes didn’t. Many of good times were had on and off the bikes together.

The DB team had a wide variety of talent, im confident that everyone will find their place within another brand in the sport. Although I wont be riding for Diamondback next year, not too much will change. I ride simply because I love it, and will continue to do so. 2014 will be my 25th consecutive season riding BMX so I’m hoping to have a memorable year. Family trips, trail sessions, countless hours at the skatepark, riding the local tracks and helping out the kids, I love all disciplines of BMX and don’t plan on hanging it up anytime soon.

Keeping the dream alive! - Nate Berkheimer

UCI BMX Supercross #2 Final from Camp Woodward West 2004

Check Out The UCI BMX SX Race Report Page, here!

It's Round Two of the UCI BMX Supercross discipline and it was held at Camp Woodward West in California.

The date is May 2nd, 2004 and the word is now out that this format of BMX racing is going to be in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, so all the fast guys were there for a chance at one of the most awesome BMX tracks, EVER!

With 50 foot plus jumps and blazing speeds down the race course carved out of the side of a mountain, this race was going to be one of the best ever!

Mike Day was THE man to beat, winning the time trial and looking like he was going to race to the finish. BUT, as BMX Racing does sometimes, there was a change of events and Derek Betcher blasted out of the pack in the main event to take the win with Mike breathing down his back tire as they sailed across the Finish Line, practically side by side!

Unreal BMX racing, check it out and if you want to see the complete event on DVD, you can find that at BMXmania.com/sxvids.htm.

GT BMX Goes Big At The USABMX Grands!
WOW! The 2013 USABMX Grand Nationals was another barnburner! This is the race where a racer’s dreams are fulfilled or crushed and there was a lot of crushing. The yearly trek to Tulsa Oklahoma is where the USABMX race season wraps up to determine who the national champions are and the GT BMX team came away with a car load of hardware.

The fast-females of the GT squad dominated their respective classes and then some. A highlight of the event was the jaw-dropping performances from “Flyin’” Felicia Stancil and Sophia Foresta. Both were invited to participate in Saturday nights “NAG 5 Challenge” which pits the top riders from select age groups to compete to see who is the fastest amateur racers in the world. Felicia was last years winner and was focused to repeat and little Miss Foresta was one of the youngest in the field looking to show her stuff against the older competitors. Both handily won their first rounds and found themselves coming together into the final against the other top qualifiers. As expected Felicia jumped out front but with Sophia in her hip pocket pushing her around the track. Sophia fell victim to an inside dive by the third place rider in turn two taking her down. Felicia went on to win the coveted race letting the pro ranks know she is coming in 2014. As for Sophia, she left no doubt that she is coming in hot for next year’s event.

The main event of the weekend was the Grand National race where the racers are focused to win their division to earn the year long battle for the cherished #1 plates. The girls all came out firing dominating their qualifiers all the way to finals with Sophia Foresta (14 Girls), Felicia Stancil (18 Girls) and Heather Allred (26-30 Girls Cruiser) each taking the #1 plates for the year. Team mascot and little sweetheart Brooklyn VanRenselaar came back from a do-or-die qualifier to lock down the #2 plate in the 6 year-old Girls division. And to add to accomplishments, Felicia want to finish out her amateur career with a bang so she jumped into the Open class with the boys and the Cruiser division. By winning all three categories Felicia accomplished what very few have ever done, the “triple” win at the Grands! An amazing feat!

With the bar raised by the girls, the GT boys had their work cut out for them. Leading the charge for the gentlemen was “Cannonball” Jack Kelly. Jack piloted his GT Pro Series Pro bike to an undefeated weekend by not losing a lap. He not only earned the Race of Champions #1 plate but also secured the #1 plate the 10 year old boys division along with earning #2 overall for points against all amateur make racers! What a great season for the quiet little giant from Utah!

In the older amateur boys classes the competition has been at an all time high. The level of talent is amazing to watch and is currently being lead by GT team shredders Sean Gaian and Jordan Miranda. Sean came off an injury early in the season to work his way back in the mix to battle for the top spot in the 17-18 Expert division which was also the largest class of the weekend with 105 competitors! The San Diego local chipped his way through all the qualifying rounds to the final round of eight but an outside gate and some strategic riding from his competitors would hold him to 3rd place which was amazing in itself. Look for Sean to be owning the division in 2014.

Teammate Jordan Miranda was also coming off an injury and was feeling amped up and healthy to show his speed in the super competitive 19-27 Expert and Open classes. Miranda easily made his way to the final rounds putting him the Open final first against all of his top competition. The “Missle” Miranda lead start to finish on his 2014 GT Carbon Speed Series with one of the best laps of the weekend. Looking to repeat in the Expert class final he ended up stuck outside going into the first turn pushing him back into the pack. Jordan was bummed but is taking the result as fuel for his competitive fire for the 2014 season.

GT team cheerleader and one of the elder statesmen of the crew is Jonas Harmon. The congenial Harmon is friends with all of his competitors but you know they don’t like it when he beats them with a smile and that he did by taking the Race of Champions #1 plate for his cruiser division. Congrats Jonas!

The pro division in 2013 has been cutthroat and more competitive than ever. GT team import Joris Daudet from France made his way over for his first ever Grand National as well as partaking in the American tradition of Thanksgiving which he thoroughly enjoyed.  The Frenchman used his fluent style and track speed to work his way through the field and into the final of the Elite Pro division final. Never giving up he came back from a few tough situations to take down a huge 5th place for the weekend.

GT Bicycles couldn’t be more proud of the team and its accomplishments on and off the track in 2013. The team radiates enthusiasm, fun and camaraderie then to add in their winning presence on the track lends to the perfect combination for what has become the most respected team in BMX riding. Thank you for an amazing year and we look forward to what 2014 brings!

The 2013 GT Factory BMX Team would like to thank its amazing sponsors who make it possible to perform at their best; Alpine Stars, GoPro, Troy Lee Designs, Tioga, Alienation, SDG, Lizard Skins, KMC, Skullcandy, BOX Components, Promax, Rockwell Watches, Only Protein and Stasis Number Plates & Bike Stands

Congrats to all of the racers and teams that chose to ride Answer for the 2013 season. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2014. See you in Reno.
